PRIZES BY LOCATION LIST, SECRET OF EVERMORE Version 1.1 4/18/2014 by Assassin http://www14.brinkster.com/assassin17/ http://home.comcast.net/~assassin17/ =============================================================================== The prizes left by defeated monsters aren't determined by the specific enemy, but rather by the area in which it was encountered. This document lists prizes and their probabilities for 126 of the game's approximately 127 total locations. That's 127 rather than the binary-expected 128 because Area #127 is apparently unused. Location 15h, "M.Brian's Test Ground", is a debug area that's inaccessible without hacking, though see http://tcrf.net for a screenshot. Area 61h, the scrolling intro screen, isn't part of actual gameplay, but is now included anyway. The locations are ordered in the sequence in which I dumped their RAM data. In other words, with not much sense. :P Apologies for this; I'll come up with a better order sometime, even if that just means going by location number. Note that 1 of the 3 area prizes is picked upon you inspecting a monster's remains, well after the game decides whether an enemy will leave behind a prize at all. For why Omnitopia and the main room in the Halls of Collosia have no prize data assigned to them, yet you can still win prizes there in some cases, see omnitopia-entry-point-prizes.txt in soe-prizes.zip . When you walk into an area that doesn't have prize data assigned to it from an area that does, the previous data is kept in RAM, but the quantities are set to 1. This is why eleven areas below have "Cash x 1" listed as a prize. When possible, I'd save, reset, and reload in prizeless areas so that no lingering prize info was present in making this list. But not every such area has an opportunity to save, and I declined to assume information for those that don't. I made a vow at the beginning of 2008 to decode the prize data, decoded most of the relevant RAM variables by the middle of that year (the ROM data still eludes me), and had the RAM data for 99 locations dumped by the end of 2010. I shamefully dragged my feet on writing a program to parse this data until February 2012. Sitting on information isn't something I like to do, but I kept putting off releasing the info until I had this fairly presentable file to offer. This was based off of playing a USA ROM; I don't know whether the prize data differs at all for other versions. Also, thanks to Snes9x Geiger for letting me easily view and copy the data bytes. I link to it, and request help finishing it. AsFarAsIGet kindly volunteers, and provides 14 previously undocumented areas! He also finds another screen for Location 6Bh, and confirms a suspicion I had about Location 52h. I convert his findings into hex bytes, so the program that generates this file can output the new areas' info. Modify the intros of location-list.txt and prizes-by-location-data.txt to account for pending changes. Corrected Alchemic's name from "Alchemist", which was a slightly excusable gaffe, imho. - January 30, February 1 and 5, 2014: Pasted new location descriptions into Pascal program's source code. Changed "Oglin Tunnel" to "Oglin Cave" in location-list.txt, as that matches authorized guide and ROM text (of the non-compressed variety, anyway). Incorporated AsFarAsIGet's findings about witch doctor in Location 52h. Generated new list for this document, and did some work revising its intro. Decided to add Location 61h, the intro/title screen, to file. Put "(Meaningless gibberish)" qualifier in place of prizes, since I thought the area retained a bunch of 55h's in RAM from reset. - Over 2 months: Whole bunch of nothing, due to tax distractions, mostly. - April 15, 17-18, 2014: Added tcrf.net mention for debug Screen 15h. Doublechecked Location 61h in debugger, and realized that the initial 55h's from reset are replaced with zeroes soon after (and 1s for the prize quantities, about a second after the area # is loaded). So I could go ahead and display that area's prize data in a normal format, however pointless. Remembered that I'd never gotten around to pasting the 14 new areas' RAM data into prizes-by-location-data.txt , and did so. Re-read AsFarAsIGet's 1/23/2014 post answering me about the waterfall screen after you jump down, en route to Oglin Cave. Had slipped my mind. Added this place to Location 6Bh. Noticed when accidentally letting auto-play demo start from opening screen that prize data (and location numbers) do change from one shown area to another. Decided to add the Omnitopia area, shown last, and what it inherits to omnitopia-entry-point-prizes.txt for a hoot. Version 1.05 : 7/28/2012 - Added Area 28h, the room in the Halls of Collosia with the collapsing wooden bridge. Either I neglected to visit it before, or somehow missed that the area number was different. - Lowered assessment of total number of areas from 128 to 127, as I'm convinced there is no Area #127, from looking at a list of area names in the ROM (thanks to Alchemic on Datacrystal for providing where these names are).
