I noticed a few topics that refer to the monster placement on the mine cart ride. If anyone has a save state (snes9x preferred) of at least Locke and Gau right before jumping onto the cart, can you email it to me cklein0001@aol.com and perhaps we will get to the bottom of this mystery...

Assassin, Zed, you're more than welcome to beat me to it :)

Nevermind, actually still had a save file from just before fighting Shiva, Ifrit, and 024, so I just have to beat them and viola, mine carts...

Wish me luck... cause I know I'll need it at lvl 6 since its been so long.

Good luck!

The battles aren't actually particularly hard at lvl 6 - they're easy enough to finish while killing & reviving your characters. Even better, the Red/Blue battle is the first to come up so you'll know if you succeeded right away. The topics that you're talking about made it sound as if the Red/Blue battle only triggered the first time that you entered the minecart room and used Gau/Locke as your frontman...although that would be some weird coding. I have no clue, myself.

Event code address:

AE $C0B9C5 Show train car ride out of the Magitek Factory

And that's about all the help I'm willing to lend. Yes, the battle code for the escape is somewhere within the code at that address, I'm willing to bet on the ultra-long subroutine at $EE0012.

Good luck on the assembly route, I'm not that curious myself.

Well, I guess a progress report is in order.

As of the moment, I've gotten the trace down to 500k with the registers in it mind you. Found two new pointer tables, one at C0FD00, and the other at D0FD00. The C0FD00 location looks highly inviting, since its used as a pointer to the Special Event Monster Formations, so a little backtracking is in order. Till next time.

Report #2

Alright, to point out the obvious, the character you have in the lead determines which set of monsters you'll fight on the first battle. The strange thing is that the game knows who was in the lead when you died out on the track, and will give you a different formation based on that.

Lets say you have my party of Edgar, Sabin, and Locke, in that order when you load the game. I will garuntee that you will see one purple mag roader when you jump on that cart. Now go ahead and die. When you get back to the save point, swap Edgar and Sabin. You'll still see that single purple smear. Die again. Now you'll see one of each. Now if you die and put either Locke or Edgar in front again, you'll still see the combination platter. Now here's the trick everyone wants to know if you're going for the 100% LLG.

When the game loads the battle parameters for the event, it asks the game who is in charge (related to location $7F:1F6D) during the last battle. According to who was first, you'll either get the line of purples or the mix with the formation of four red ones thrown in. The only way I've found to get both Mag Roader colors and keep the experience to a minimum is to jump on the cart with Sabin or someone else that will give you the red encounters and then sacrifice yourself as monster kibble. When you reload back on the save point, switch back over to Locke. Now when you jump back on the cart, the first battle will be one red, one purple. Once you kill them, the rest of the line will be purple, giving you a whopping 682 EXP.

Now my question is if the AIF works the same way.

good work.. welcome back, man; you have made your arrival noticed!

Tashibana's ZST doc has some offsets of interest: http://www14.brinkster.com/assassin17/ff6zst.txt

2469 thru 2472, in particular. note that you need to subtract the C13h of the ZST header to get the real RAM addys. i really can't read the Portuguese in those subsections (guess it's not just drunken Spanish after all..), and there's a number of question marks.

but i'm going to mess with formations in every manner imaginable and finally (re?) resolve what those bytes are.

gar.. no wonder Tashibana's descriptions of those bytes were so terse and "???" ridden (on top of being in the wrong language, gar! ^__~).

there are bytes/bits that respond to row, party order and party members. but i can't make heads or tails of them.. like there's unexplainably identical results in some cases: a party of Terra, Celes, Gau, Setzer matches Locke, Celes, Gau, Setzer; also Front, Back, Front, Back matches Back, Back, Front Front.

argh!@ i'd tried just searching for a straight-up character number using SNES9x's "Search for Cheats" feature. but no luck. i guess storing their bloody numbers in a straightforward fashion would be too logical.

ok, i played with Snes9x again, and 7E:11FB definitely seems to hold the lead character.. it must not have worked for me before because i was swapping characters in positions other than the 1st one; apparently, the other 3 aren't stored so upfront. don't ask why i would mess with the other slots while investigating a topic about the lead character :/

CRK: would having Sabin lead the party in the last random battle before the commute also work?

It will probably work, I have to reinstall the .srm file from my backup cd first since i overwrote the file from fighting 024. Shouldn't be too hard to take care of though, I forgot how much of a weakling he is against a LLG party.

Huh - that actually makes sense. That would be the reason that a reload always produced the same results while a continue could be different. Nice work - that's a helpful bit of knowledge for the LLGamer.
